Kyoto Market Bunching Spring Onion
Alium Fistulosum
Story: This hardy fast growing spring onion is a favourite of market gardeners and home growers alike for its sweet, mild flavour and quick time to harvest from seed (roughly eighty days) - they thrive in cool weather and have a smooth white-bright green gradient, growing uniformly. Known to be cultivated since the 1800s in Kyoto gardens in Japan. Fantastic to sow in successions to harvest for a long period, they tolerate cool weather well and are useful to fill in gaps between main crops in the garden.
When to sow: From late February indoors in modules to plant outdoors after signs of frost have passed.
Requirements: Nutrient-rich soil, regular watering, a lot of sun and some support if seed saving.
When to harvest for food: Harvest as needed at any age by cutting leaves with scissors or wait till mature and pull whole spring onions, root and all, to use as a vegetable.
When to harvest for seed saving: Wait for flower heads to fully dry on the plant and become papery and the small black seeds fully visible before clipping from plant into brown paper bags or containers.
