Krasan Aubergine

Story: A Czech bred early aubergine, this performed so well for us in 2025 that we are excited to hear more about all of your growing experiences this year. It is a high yielding variety with amazing flavour and we will be exploring growing it outdoors this year - a really favourite for us, it grew as a stocky, spineless plant and only suffered from aphid damage very late in the season. We used some supports from midsummer as they heavy fruit can weigh down or even snap branches!

When to sow: From late January indoors with supplemental heat to get a long growing season in, then planting outdoors after any risk or frost or indoors once the soil is warming up. You can also as late as March or early April also

Requirements: Nutrient-rich soil, regular watering, a lot of sun and some support

When to harvest for food: For eating, pick fruits as they ripen on the plant

When to harvest for seed saving: Pick aubergines for seed saving when they are mature on the branch - just make sure they are very ripe and older than you would harvest for food.

Seed contributors: Omved Gardens, originally from Real Seeds.

Isolation Needed: Yes

Saving Seed:  Aubergines largely self pollinate but do cross more readily than tomatoes so we recommend only growing one variety to an area to save seed true to type -

Number of plants to save seeds from: We recommend a minimum of five plants to maintain genetic diversity with twenty or more being ideal for conservation.

Pollination: Insect or self pollinated.

How to send seed back: Please label all seed with variety, type, date and your contact. If you didn't get a chance to fill out our online data collection form, you can also send us a few lines about how it grew for you/flavour etc. Please aim to send back 1 tablespoon of dried seed or more so that we can continue to share with network members. Send to: The Seed Saving Network, Omved Gardens, 1 Townsend Yard, N6 5JF.

Please remember, if you’re an individual grower you can order up to 4 packets of seeds. If you order more than this, you will receive just four packs to begin with. This is to ensure we get plenty of data in return and to keep our stocks sustainable for years to come.*

*Community groups and Experienced Growers can order larger quantities, please email us if this is the case.

If an item is out of stock we will send a close alternative.
